Elden Ring: How to Complete Gideon’s Questline (2024)

The opening cutscene of Elden Ring refers to several characters known as Tarnished of Renown, beings that were famous or infamous in their previous lives. Each of these characters appears in the game as NPCs with questlines or boss fights, sometimes even both. One of these characters is Sir Gideon Ofnir, the All-Knowing, who serves as a kind of guide that gives you information about the major bosses in the game and has a questline tied to him. Players wanting to complete this quest will need to know what it is about and when to complete it before it is locked for the rest of the game. This guide will explain how to complete Gideon Ofnir, the All-Knowing’s questline in Elden Ring.

How To Complete Gideon’s Questline In Elden Ring

The most important note about this quest is that once you defeat the boss known as Maliketh, the Black Blade in Crumbling Farum Azula, you will be unable to continue the quest. Make sure that you complete all of these steps before reaching that part to ensure you get the most out of Gideon’s questline.

Step 1: First Meeting With Gideon At The Roundtable Hold

Gideon’s questline starts when you first meet him in the Roundtable Hold upon your first visit to the Hub location. He can be found to the left of the stairs that lead up to a closed door that contains the Two Fingers near the roundtable. He will welcome you as a guest of the roundtable but not say much else. Reloading the area will see him move to his study through the left hallway and will have the silent NPC Ensha standing outside. He will not even give you the time of day until you prove that you are a Tarnished that will be able to fulfill your quest, which means you need a Great Rune.

Step 2: Acquire A Great Rune

You will now need to gain an audience with the Two Fingers in order to get Gideon to talk to you. The first Shardbearer boss you will most likely beat is Godrick the Grafted. When you defeat a Shardbearer, you can talk to the Two Fingers. Once you do, you will be able to talk to Gideon. he will be able to give you background information on most of the other Shardbearers in the game.

Step 2.5: Other Questlines That Involve Gideon

After you get the Great Rune, Gideon will tell you to travel to the Royal Capital of Leyndell. Along the way, there are a few other questlines that you can involve Gideon. The first one is the one that involves his adopted daughter, Nepheli Loux. After you meet her in Stormveil Castle and defeat Godrick the Grafted, she will be standing outside Gideon’s office and will tell you of their relationship. This will allow you to ask Gideon about her. She can then be found at the Village Of The Albinaurics and will aid you in defeating Omenkiller. Doing so will see Gideon disowning her back at the Hold. This is the end of his involvement in her quest.

While at the Village, you can meet Albus the Albinauric, who will give you the right half of the Haligtree Medallion. Upon returning to the Roundtable Hold, Ensha will attack you, attempting to take the Medallion piece for himself. Kill Ensha, and you can talk to Gideon about the attack. He will then tell you to find Latenna the Albinauric in Liurnia. She can be found at the Slumbering Wolf’s Shack and will become a Spirit Summon that has her own quest as well.

Finally, when you meet the character Seluvis behind Caria Manor, he will tell you to give a potion to Nepheli. Doing so will kill her. To progress both of their quests without either dying, bring the potion to Gideon instead. He will offer to dispose of it and tell you to lie to Selivus. This works, and you can continue the questlines no problem!

Step 3: Reach Leyndell, Royal Capital, Defeat Morgott, The Omen King

With all of these other quests advanced, you can make your way to Leyndell, Royal Capital. The final boss of this area is Morgott, The Omen King, which you will need to defeat to gain more dialogue from Gideon.

Step 4: Return to Gideon And Talk About The Missing Demi-Gods

Once you defeat The Omen King, you will gain a new dialogue option with Gideon where he discusses the missing Demi-gods that were not on his list of characters prior. The three he discusses are Malenia, Blade of Miquella, Mohg, the Lord of Blood, and the Lunar Princess Ranni, though he does explain that Ranni cast aside her Great Rune, so it is only the first two that he is interested in. He will tell you that if you are able to find these two Shardbearers, he will provide you with knowledge only he contains. You will get rewarded for both reaching the bosses mentioned as well as defeating them.

Step 5: Find And Kill Malenia, Blade of Miquella, And Mohg, Lord Of Blood.

Now that you have talked to Gideon about the missing Demigods, you will now need to find them. To reach Malenia, Blade of Miquella, you will need to find the other half of the Haligtree Medallion, gaining access to the Consecrated Snowfield. You will then need to solve a puzzle at Ordina Liturgical Town for that access to Miquella’s Haligtree. You can return to Gideon to tell him where to find Miquella to gain the Black Flame’s Protection incantation. Continue through Miquella’s Haligtree and Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, and at the end, you will find Malenia. She is arguably the most challenging boss in the game, and defeating her will grant you both her Remembrance and a Great Rune. Return to Gideon after defeating her to receive the Lord’s Divine Fortification incantation.

To find Mohg, the Lord of Blood, you will need to get the Pureblood Knight’s Medal as a part of the questline for the NPC White-faced Varre. Using this item will teleport you directly to Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum. You can also find a teleported in the Consecrated Snowfield that will take you to Mohgwyn’s Palace, which will lead you to the Mausoleum. At the end of the Mausoleum, you will find Mohg. Upon reaching this area, you can return to Gideon to receive the Fevor’s Cookbook [3] and also get the Law of Causality incantation from Gideon when you defeat Mohg.

Step 6: Defeat Gideon At Leyndell, Ashen Capital

Even if you miss every previous step of Gideon’s questline in Elden Ring, he will be the boss you have to face after defeating Maliketh, the Black Blade in Crumbling Farum Azula. This is also the point that you will be unable to complete any of the previous steps you have not done yet until you enter New Game+, so make sure you do everything in the quest before finishing Crumbling Farum Azula. Kill Gideon to get his armor set and then progress to the final stretch of the game, thus bringing Gideon’s questline to a close in Elden Ring.
