Seit 2003 hat sich das Red Bull Air Race zu einer weltweit beachteten Motorsport-Rennserie entwickelt. Nach drei Jahren Pause geht es 2014 weiter.
In den zehn Jahren nach dem offiziellen ersten Rennen hat sich die Red Bull Air Race-Rennserie zu einer der aufregendsten Motorsportdisziplinen der Welt entwickelt.
Mit einer Kombination aus Gewandtheit, Geschicklichkeit, Geschwindigkeit und extrem hoher Manövrierfähigkeit verlangt dieser Wettkampf von den weltweit talentiertesten Piloten nur wenige Meter u¨ber dem Boden aussergewöhnliche Flugfähigkeiten. Erfunden wurde diese Rennserie im Red Bull Think Tank.
Das urspru¨ngliche Ziel bestand darin, den herausforderndsten Hochleistungs-Motorsport aus der Taufe zu heben, den die Welt je gesehen hat. Damit war die Bu¨hne frei – und Top-Piloten aus aller Welt waren eingeladen, sich bei diesem Wettkampf zu messen.
Die Red Bull Air Race Weltmeisterschaft ist ein wahres Fest fu¨r die Augen und kann mit keiner anderen Sportart verglichen werden, wird doch dieser raue sportliche Wettkampf vor atemberaubenden Kulissen ausgetragen. Dieser Motorsport hat sehr schnell eine riesige Fangemeinde in der ganzen Welt gefunden und fesselt Millionen Menschen durch sein aufregendes und dynamisches Rennformat.
Die jeweiligen Rennstrecken werden zum Teil inmitten von Städten aufgebaut, wodurch die ganze Action des Sports direkt zu den Zuschauern gebracht wird.
Die speziell gestalteten Rennstrecken sind das Ergebnis umfassender Forschungsarbeiten und Evaluierung. Die einzigartigen Pylonen – auch Air Gates genannt – wurden 2002 entwickelt und haben sich in den vergangenen zehn Jahren zu dem technisch hoch anspruchsvollen Design von heute entwickelt. Sie werden 2014 rund 5 Meter höher sein als 2010 und wurden so konstruiert, dass sie bei der kleinsten Beru¨hrung reissen und in sich zusammensacken, aber dennoch wieder aufgeblasen werden können. Nach einigen Jahren mit Testrennen fiel der offizielle Startschuss fu¨r die Red Bull Air Race Weltmeisterschaft 2005.
Dies war auch der Beginn einer neuen Ära in der Geschichte dieser jungen Sportart.
Abstecher in die Geschichte
Im Jahr 2005 kämpften zehn Piloten in sieben spannenden Rennen an verschiedenen Schauplätzen auf der ganzen Welt – mit Locations in den USA und Europa. Der US-Pilot Mike Mangold, ein fru¨herer US-Air-Force-Kampfjäger, dominierte diese erste Saison, konnte fu¨nf der insgesamt sieben Rennen fu¨r sich entscheiden – in den Niederlanden (Rotterdam), Österreich (Zeltweg), Grossbritannien (Longleat), Ungarn (Budapest) und den USA (San Francisco).
Mangold heimste 36 WM-Punkte ein, während der Ungar Peter Besenyei mit insgesamt 32 Punkten auf den zweiten Platz kam. Dritter wurde Kirby Chambliss (USA) mit 21 Punkten.
Elf Piloten kämpften dann 2006 in acht Rennen um die WM-Krone. Chambliss war dabei eine Klasse fu¨r sich, gewann vier der acht Rennen – in Abu Dhabi, Deutschland (Berlin), Tu¨rkei (Istanbul) und den USA (San Francisco). Er errang damit 38 WM-Punkte. Auf dem zweiten Platz folgte erneut Besenyei (Ungarn) mit 35 Punkten; Mangold kam auf Rang 3 mit 30 Punkten.
Im Jahr 2007 wurde die Weltmeisterschaft auf insgesamt 13 Piloten und elf Rennen ausgeweitet.
Dabei war auch zum ersten Mal Rio de Janeiro in Su¨damerika Schauplatz eines Rennens.
Die Rookies
Hannes Arch (Österreich) und Sergey Rakhmanin (Russland) bestritten ihre erste Saison. Es entwickelte sich ein spannender Titelkampf zwischen Mangold und dem Briten Paul Bonhomme – beide verbuchten jeweils drei Siege. Mangold entschied das Rennen in der Tu¨rkei (Istanbul) fu¨r sich, in Grossbritannien (London) und Ungarn (Budapest), während Bonhomme in Brasilien (Rio de Janeiro), der Schweiz (Interlaken) und den USA (San Diego) die Oberhand behielt. Beide beendeten die Saison punktgleich mit 47 Zählern. Den Titel aber heimste Mangold durch den besseren direkten Vergleich ein. Peter Besenyei wurde mit 31 Punkten WM-Dritter.
2008 trugen zwölf Piloten insgesamt acht Rennen aus. Fu¨r Glen Dell aus Su¨dafrika war dies die erste WM-Saison. Der Österreicher Hannes Arch – gerade einmal in seiner zweiten Saison – gewann als erster Europäer den WM-Titel.
Bonhomme, begierig darauf seine Niederlage aus dem Jahr 2007 wieder wettzumachen, dominierte die erste Hälfte der Saison mit Siegen in Abu Dhabi, San Diego und Rotterdam sowie einem zweiten Platz in Detroit. Aber in der zweiten Saisonhälfte kam der Brite ins Straucheln – er verfehlte Podiumsplätze bei den Rennen in London und Porto (Portugal), konnte lediglich das Abschlussrennen in Perth gewinnen. Arch dagegen siegte lediglich bei zwei Rennen – in Budapest und Porto. Er erreichte jedoch in allen sieben der insgesamt neun Rennen einen Podiumsplatz und strich somit 61 WM-Punkte ein. Bonhomme, 54 Punkte, musste sich daher mit dem zweiten Platz zufrieden geben, während Chambliss mit 46 Punkten auf Rang 3 kam.
2009 stiessen insgesamt vier Rookies zur Red Bull Air Race Weltmeisterschaft dazu. Das Teilnehmerfeld war damit auf insgesamt 15 Piloten angewachsen. Unter den Neulingen gab es auch den ersten Piloten aus Asien, Yoshi Muroya (Japan), den ersten aus Kanada, Pete McLeod, sowie den ersten Piloten aus Australien, Matt Hall. Ebenfalls neu im Feld – der Deutsche Matthias Dolderer. Bonhomme konnte nach den undankbaren zweiten Plätzen 2007 und 2008 im Jahr 2009 erstmals den prestigeträchtigen WM-Titel gewinnen.
Arch siegte im Auftaktrennen in Abu Dhabi und behielt diesen Vorsprung bis zum vierten Rennen in Budapest, wo er dann von Bonhomme an der Spitze abgelöst wurde. Bonhomme konnte drei Saisonrennen fu¨r sich entscheiden – Windsor (Kanada), Porto (Portugal) und Barcelona (Spanien).
Die Saison 2009 entpuppte sich als die konkurrenzstärkste Saison in der Geschichte der Weltmeisterschaft: Acht der insgesamt 15 Piloten erzielten zumindest einmal einen Podiumsplatz und elf von ihnen eine Top-5-Platzierung. Mike Mangold, immer noch der einzige Pilot, der den begehrten Titel mehr als einmal gewinnen konnte, beendete seine Karriere nach dem Ende der Saison 2009. Sein Rekord steht immer noch. Auch Glen Dell zog sich nach Ende der Saison im vergangenen Jahr aus der Red Bull Air Race Weltmeisterschaft zuru¨ck.
Im Jahr 2010 wurden acht Rennen ausgetragen, zwei Piloten stiessen neu dazu: Adilson Kindlemann aus Brasilien und Martin Sonka aus der Tschechischen Republik.
Die Spannung war vor drei Jahren noch grösser als je zuvor. Die Erfolgsgeschichte der Red Bull Air Race Weltmeisterschaft ging weiter. Zum ersten Mal wurde ein Rennen in New York ausgetragen, Perth in Australien stand ebenso wie Rio de Janeiro wieder auf dem Rennkalender.
Seit dem ersten Rennen wurde das Rennformat immer weiter entwickelt, und die Red Bull Air Race Weltmeisterschaft hat sich in der Motorsport-Arena eine einzigartige Position erkämpft. Ein ausgeklu¨geltes Trainingsprogramm hat sich etabliert, um junge talentierte Piloten fu¨r die Zukunft zu gewinnen.
Und durch den immer grösser werdenden Bedarf an spezifischen Rennflugzeugen, die gerade unter solchen Wettkampfbedingungen Höchstleistungen bringen mu¨ssen, hat die Technologie beim Bau von Leichtgewichts-Flugzeugen grosse Fortschritte gemacht.
